Let’s take a walk in Foligno....
This is the meeting place of all the “folignati” that happen to be there either for work or leisure and the atmosphere is joyful. The piazza was built in a stretched shape according to the typical Umbrian Medieval squares of 12th-13th centuries. Four roads depart from the four corners The side façade of the Foligno Cathedral can be admired on the northern side of the square. It has maintained the charme of its original Romanesque aspect rich in decoration but simple in shape. The Cathedral interior is neoclassic, being the crypt the only remain of the original building.
Opposite the Palazzo delle Canoniche is the Town Hall whose aspect is the result of the modifications of the 19th century. On its side you can find the lovely Palazzetto Orfini, Renaissance in style and very important because it was there that the first printed edition of Dante’s Divine Comedy was realized in 1472 by Giovanni Numeister. The building next to it is the Palazzo del Podestà built in the 15th century and which features lovely architectural details typical of that period. But the real jewel of the Piazza is the Palazzo Trinci whose outside aspect doesn’t reveal the many beauties that it enshrines in its interior. The present building is the result of the superimposition of various medieval buildings and the façade belongs to the 19th century. As soon as you enter the courtyard you realize how splendid the Palazzo is. The big staircase leads into the rooms that hide treasures of inestimable value. The exquisite frescoes by Gentile da Fabriano and other famous painters enchant the visitor with their richness and fine execution.
The church of S. Maria Infraportas is just an example of the traces left by the long history of Foligno: it has Roman origins – in the Chapel of the Assunta S. Peter and Paul are said to have praised - and its actual aspect is Romanesque with frescoes from the Foligno school of the XVth and XVIth centuries. |
